Details: Silk painter Clytie Mead shares insight and technique about how she develops an idea for a painting. The artist will lead a short nature walk (cameras encouraged) through the national park and discuss how she finds interesting subjects to paint. MAPPING HAWAII’S AGRICULTURAL FOOTPRINT — EMERGING TRENDS IN HAWAII’S RURAL LAND USE

Details: The state Department of Agriculture contracted UH-Hilo to produce current maps of Hawaii’s agricultural footprint. The Agricultural Baseline 2015 will expand on the award-winning “Hawaii County Food Self-Sufficiency Baseline” that mapped the digital footprint of agriculture on Hawaii Island in 2012 and will shed new light on the many forms that post-plantation agriculture presents statewide. This presentation will share preliminary results of the mapping effort, important observations about what drives agricultural land use throughout the state, discussion about Hawaii’s emergent rural landscape and realities that underlie our quest for increased food self-reliance.

44TH ANNUAL QUEEN LILI‘UOKALANI LONG DISTANCE OUTRIGGER CANOE RACES

Details: More than 2,500 outrigger canoe paddlers will be welcomed to Kona for this signature 18-mile distance race. Kai ‘Opua Canoe Club, one of Hawaii’s oldest outrigger canoe clubs, will host crews from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Tahiti, the United Kingdom and an estimated 75 crews from the mainland. Hawaii will be well-represented with multiple crews, and more than 60 Big Island crews also are expected on the starting line. Other official Queen Lili‘uokalani Canoe Race events unfold throughout the holiday weekend, including the Historic Kailua Village Cultural Walk, Paddling Talk Story, Native Artist Fair, Torchlight Parade, Stand-up Paddleboard Race, Alii Challenge and, new this year, the Hulakai OC4 (four-person canoes) Sprint Relay Race.
